Before I start, I want to say something. I’ve been using this forum since around January of 2008 when it was still called off-topic after having lurked a few months. It was during a time of my life where I was coming out of my shell and trying to be less of a hermit. I’d been floating around a couple of sites, but nothing felt like an actual community like this place does. I love cars, but I’ve also loved having a place where I could talk about cars AND other things with people, and where I could be myself without being harassed. You don’t know how valuable that’s been to me. Coming out here helped me do it in real life, and it improved my quality of life greatly. I met my partner (now my husband) in February of that same year, and my career has evolved to where I’m doing something that I have a passion for (overseeing maintenance for a fleet of vehicles). Things are great, but I’ll be crushed if and when this place goes away. There’s nothing like it anywhere else. Even though a LOT of people have come and gone, it still feels like home. I love all of you!

Ok, enough with that crap.

Like I said, I’ve been here since around January of 2008. This is what I was driving at the time:

Kinja'd!!!

It was a SWB ‘05 Caravan with a 4-cylinder, and I actually bought it on purpose. I’d had a ‘98 LeSabre that had weird engine control problems that repeatedly could not be diagnosed. I gave up on that POS and found the cheapest low-mileage thing that I thought would be somewhat reliable. And for a while it was. It was slow, kind of noisy, and also a minivan. But it got 27 mpg regularly, was comfortable enough, and I was able to use it when I had to help out at work and do deliveries on the side. Unfortunately, the transmission was made by Chrysler. It started to have torque converter problems, and I couldn’t afford to fix it.

My solution was to look for a new vehicle that had a lot of cash on the hood to help with my upside-down-ness. This was in May of 2009, and the two cars at the time that had the biggest rebates were the 2009 Kia Spectra ($4000 in rebates) and the 2009 Ford Ranger ($4500). We looked at a Kia Spectra first because I thought the Ranger would be just out of my price range. I almost bought it, even without A/C, but the dealership’s sales manager was a total ass and reneged on the deal we’d worked on (the salesperson was PISSED OFF) and basically told us to leave if we didn’t like the new terms. I am overjoyed that that particular Kia dealer does not exist anymore. After leaving the lot we were driving past a Ford dealer and my partner spotted a Blue single-cab Ranger and forced me to stop and look at it.

Kinja'd!!!

It was a base model, but had a few options. It had the upgraded stereo with an AUX input, the 40/20/40 sport cloth bench with center console armrest, and A/C. Not to mention it was an actual color, where most base Rangers only came in white, silver, or gray. Other than that it was the great American 2WD, rubber-floor, 5-speed manual, power-nothing basic truck. We got an ok deal on it, and I took it home. I loved this truck. It gave me almost 5 years of trouble-free driving. It was my first RWD vehicle. If you live in a snow state, you’ll hear that RWD is the worst in the snow from people who don’t know any better. They’re full of shit. I put 240 lbs. of sandbags in the back and this thing was great in the snow. And a hell of a lot of fun, too. It was even fun on twisty roads. I spent many hours bombing up the foothills in it with a cigar in my hand and a smile on my face. Plus, I averaged 28-30 MPG in it, no joke.

In January of 2014, I started to get the itch for something different. I started looking around to see what was available, and I drove past a Mitsubishi dealer that had a cute blue Fiat 500 Sport out front. I found it was in my price range and only had around 13k miles, so I went for it.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

As opposed to the Ranger, this car had loads of standard equipment. Power everything, half-leather seats, cruise, power sunroof, etc. Still had a manual though. These only have 101 hp and are not fast, but they are fun to drive fast around corners. As long as you keep it in the power band, it does great. I also was getting 38-42 MPG, which was a bonus. What wasn’t a bonus was winter driving. Besides the low-profile tires, the traction control and the manual gearbox fought with each other constantly. You might say why not turn off the traction control? Great idea! Too bad you can’t really do that. Oh, there’s a button, and it puts a light on the dash that says it’s off, but if the computer decides it doesn’t like what you’re doing it will come on anyway. Sweet! Also, while my partner liked driving in it he didn’t like riding in it. Neither did Sophie, our corgi mix. We’d have to load her in to the back seat from the hatch and she hated jumping over the folded seat half. So last August I gave up on it and succumbed to the siren song of the beige.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

It’s comfortable, roomy, 200 perfectly capable horsepower, and has an automatic gearbox that I don’t hate. Also I’m really happy to have Sirius back. I wish it got better gas mileage though. And that’s really all that’s worth mentioning about it. Just like a Camry, but better looking and with slightly worse build quality. I wouldn’t say I love it, but I do like it and that’s good enough for now. Also my partner and my dog are totally fine with riding in this one.

So what cars have you owned since you found Oppo? I’m certain that everyone else’s choices will be way more Jalop than mine, but I’m totally ok with that. (I know I posted about the Ranger, but I can’t find it or anything from that time period.)

I have few pictures of my since-oppo vehicles...but at the time of discovery we owned a ‘97 Saturn SC2 and an ‘05 Chevy Malibu Maxx. I still own the Maxx, but the Saturn left us last year. In 2014 we added an ‘05 Toyota Tacoma, 2wd standard cab w/ 5spd, and then last year we replaced the Saturn with a ‘15 Accord EX.

Sorta jalop, in that one is a 5-door hatch and one has a 5spd. Still, not terribly jalop either.

I’ve had my 2014 Subaru BRZ the whole time I’ve been on Oppo (approaching two years).

Kinja'd!!!

I briefly owned my wife’s previous car, the most basic 2002 Ford Focus LX you can get (except for the automatic).

Kinja'd!!!

We would’ve kept it as a winter beater / rallycross car, but a friend in need got screwed by her insurance and left without a car, and we didn’t really need the Focus, so we passed it along to her.

Right around then, we picked up a project 1988 Jeep Comanche.

Kinja'd!!!

I was putting it back on the road, then intending to turn it into a killer rally sweep vehicle. Then the motor died. We were in the process of buying a house, and couldn’t afford to fix it ourselves. I sold it to a guy in the next town over, so I’ve been able to take a look at it from time to time. He’s fixed it, and swapped a bunch of parts from his dead XJ over.

There have been a couple of short term interlopers. Like this EcoBoost Mustang that Ford gave me to use as the course opening car at Black River Stages last year.

Kinja'd!!!

At the moment I’m trying on a Focus ST for size. It’s nothing like the 2002 we used to own. I’m liking it.

Kinja'd!!!

I could do without the loud bumblebee color scheme, but that’s just personal preference. I’ll take mine in Kona Blue, please.

I learned to drive in an ‘87 Cherokee, so this was almost the same from the B-pillar forward (except the bench seat, foot pedal e-brake, and column shifter). The floorboards, which always rust out, had just been replaced, too, so this would’ve lasted a while. At least it lives on, in the hands of someone who appreciates it and can fix it when it goes wrong.

I wish I could own more than one car at a time and had some time to dig myself out of the college debt hole. Because in my illustrious 7 years of driving in my life, I have only owned two cars. Green Honda Civic for 5 and a half years. And now my Miata for the last year and a half. I think I will definitely keep the Miata longer as long as it doesn’t rust away first. Funny how I NEVER cleaned the civic and drove it through all kinds of winter hell and it never had a spec of rust. The Miata has been babied and cleaned frequently and yet it has the typical rot. Anyways, I think I have been on Oppo for like 4 years or so but I spent most of that just reading.

Pre oppo:

1977 dodge conversion van, full size, extended body, LWB. Loved that thing, it was a beast, and so far the only vehicle I would buy back and restore no matter the cost....

1987 Plymouth caravan, 2.2l

1985 dodge conversion van, SWB

1997 Chrysler Sebring JXI convertible, my first nice car.

1999 dodge Dakota R/T, bought in 2001-2 ish, and still drive it in the nicer weather. My first performance oriented vehicle.

2000 Chrysler Sebring JXI, I bought to save money on fuel.

1997 neon ACR, bought for a toy and to autox. Sold it to help pay for an engagement ring.

2006 cadillac sts4, my first, post marriage vehicle.

2005 Cadillac CTS-v, fun, fun car. I would buy another as a toy of I didn’t have my dd car I have now.

2007 Audi Q7, blew up the cts-v and picked this up in preparation of my first son being born. Still have his one too.

POST OPPO:

2012 Audi S4 6MT, it checked all the boxes, awd, stick, and fast. It’s been a decent replacement for the cts-v, but I still miss the sounds of the caddy. This is my dd now and I can’t complain.

2017 Chrysler Pacifica, this is the first new car I’ve ever purchased. Family has expanded to wife and 3 boys, so we needed a bit more room than the q7.

I still miss that van.....

2. 1998 Honda Civic -$500 Base model, black, 5 speed, swapped in a new engine and transmission, de-riced, put on OEM exhaust, short shifter, upgraded speakers, OEM headlights and tails, 1.5" lowering springs, steelies with refinished factory wheel covers. 5. 1997 Buick Riviera - $650 Bought from a coworker. Still have this one. Was white with lots of flaking paint and surface rust. Now multiple colors of shitty Rustoleum. Base model, sunroof, naturally aspirated 3800 Series II. Upgraded the audio, replaced rear shocks, upgraded sway bars, poly end links, belt tensioner, new tires, new driver seat, remove peeling tint.

6. 1993 Nissan Sentra SE-R - $1 Bought from Opponaut TheJWT. Black. Still have it. Lots of rust, blown shocks all around, had awful ebay coilovers, rod knock, horrid paint job, lots of dents, no headliner. It’s definelty a nice little ride! Its UK spec with the 1.4T and a 6 speed DCT. The power is a little lacking to my American standards but for around town is just enough & the sound system is the amazing! I’d definitely recommend one. My partner and I got it to replace his aging Twingo haha I say it’s my Jeep but it’s really his haha(;

I know we’d end up getting the 2.4. My partner is really good at using a manual but I know he wants an automatic.

Would you go for a Trailhawk trim? My partner is the same with being able to drive manual but prefers auto which is weird for a brit but I don’t mind as i’ve found it hard enough to adjust to the roads here and having a manual just adds to my confusion.

Yeah, I think that’s what he wants. In yellow or orange, probably.

When I joined Oppo, I had my little ‘08 Mazda3 hatch. I miss it. I owned it from August 2009 when it had 12,000 miles to October 2015 when it had 75,000 miles. It was reliable, fun, spacious (because hatchback) and loud as hell (because custom exhaust).

In October of last year, I traded it in on a new 2016 Mazda6, which I love. It will be my official “dad car” once our son or daughter is born in February 2017.

My dad had a bunch a Ram C/V’s in his fleet, he just replaced all of them with MB Metris’s. So far he has heard very good about them.

I turned 16 got a hand me down 2003 Honda Odyssey EX-L (5spd auto), and there was a family shared 2007 RWD Nissan Frontier (5spd auto). I often bounced between those 2, the Nissan more so since it had a locking rear diff and did great burn outs. The rust got to them, and they where done. Then a 2003 AWD Pontiac Vibe (4spd auto), the rust got to it and killed it along with age & rust related problems. After not wanting to deal with old rusty cars, and I got a low KM 2012 Chevy Sonic (base model, 5spd), the beginning of this summer I wanted something with AC so I traded (lost $1000) it on a 2011 Nissan Juke SV (6spd). Whats next I don’t know.

I haven’t even been here for a year but in that time I have had 2 different cars.

1) 2001 Subaru Outback with an automatic (which oddly I have never driven since joining oppo because of school)

2) My 2004 Mini Cooper with a 5 speed which I love. My dad had taken delivery of it about a month before I got home from school meaning I had a new car to drive at the start of summer.

Well, I only discovered Oppo (And, all of Kinja, really) last year, so it’s been:

99 Buick Century (Who finally succumbed to a decade plus of abuse) and my no-budget midlife crisis-mobile

94 Honda Prelude (Who my insurance rejected on the grounds that it was a ‘high-performance vehicle that could be modified for racing’)

First car I ever drove was an ‘84 Rabbit 4-speed, my dad’s car. First I owned was an ‘88 VW Fox wagon that I got (paid my dad back, with interest) when I went to grad school. Got married, and inherited my wife’s ‘82 Sentra. When the transmission died on that, we replaced it with a ‘96 Dodge Stratus, then I dumped the Fox and and replaced it with an ‘01 Golf. When the twins came along, we dumped the Stratus and got an ‘03 Odyssey. Then a few months ago we got a ‘13 Civic, and I lost my Golf to a drunk driver while it was parked on the street. So now, we have the Oddy and the Civic.

For me, first car, bought in 2008 was a 2002 Subaru Impreza 2.5TS wagon with a stick, a glitchy, poorly-installed aftermarket alarm and broken A/C. Loved it and miss it dearly. Sold it at 170,000kms with the body starting to rust and the rear subframe cracked and completely rusted out...sold it in 2013...affectionately called ‘Beastie’

My current car, bought in April of 2013 is a completely no-options 2009 Hyundai Accent hatchback with a stick, affectionately called ‘Humdrum’. :)

Well I would gladly change out cars more often (or at least have multiple cars and just have 1 that stays around) but I just haven’t gotten there yet in life. But yeah I hope to never regret getting rid of a car. I was glad with getting out of the Honda. That thing lived a long hard life and somehow I still sold it for more than I bought it for. Hondas do well on the used market!

I went from a ‘93 Mustang LX four-cylinder five-speed manual to a ‘97 Mustang GT automatic to a ‘06 Miata six-speed manual to a ‘10 IS250 six-speed manual and finally to my current ‘14 BRZ six-speed manual.

Of all the ones I’ve lost along the way, the only one I want back is the Miata.

When I found Oppo around 2010 (2009?) I owned a 1998 Ford Ranger. That Ranger hadn’t run since 2007, because a week after I bought it I put it in the garage, gutted the interior, and started preparing it to be built into a desert race truck. For getting around I was relying on the family fleet, which at the time was a 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan, a 2001 Lincoln Town Car, a 2002 Ford Taurus, and a 2003 Dodge Caravan. The ‘96 started developing an electrical issue where it would randomly die every couple months (and sometimes not restart), so in November we added a 2001 Subaru Outback.

The next year (2011) I bought my second car, a 2008 Ford Ranger. It was also a desert truck, and not road legal. But that one runs! We got rid of the ‘96 the same year. Saw it driving around town for a couple years with livery plates, but haven’t seen it in a long time.

In 2012 the ‘02 Taurus was replaced with an ‘08 because our mechanic called the ‘02 “too dangerous to drive and too broken to be made safe for a reasonable amount of money.”

I sold the ‘98 Ranger, still not running, in 2013. That same year I took possession of a 2005 Impreza 2.5 RS rally car and a F-350 dually because the team had moved to Denver and it made more sense to keep the car and truck on the east coast (because there’s no rally in Colorado).

My mom got a chance to buy her nephew’s 2010 Mazda 3 for a song in Spring 2014. The ‘01 Outback became mine at that point, which was a good thing because I had to give up the rally car and truck, which I’d been using to get around when everything else was being used. The ‘03 Caravan ate its second engine in five years during the summer of ‘14, so it was replaced with a 2012 Town and Country. Finally, to top off this year of automotive transitions, my ‘01 Outback suffered a brake failure and a failing head gasket in October. I sold it and bought a 2008 Outback XT (the go-fast version), which I have been more than smitten with since. The XT is the first road-legal car that I’ve bought/owned.
